The ICCA Registry and data

The ICCA Registry is an online information platform where indigenous peoples and/or local communities provide data, case studies, maps, photos and stories relating to their ICCAs. Prior to the Registry,¬†there had been no consistent way to measure and document the crucial values and roles communities play in conservation. As a result, the Registry idea was generated and decided upon at the ICCA Consortium’s first official meeting during the¬†4th World Conservation Congress¬†in Barcelona (Spain) in October 2008.¬†

The development of the ICCA Registry has been guided by input at recent global meetings and is advised by the ICCA Consortium. The Registry is managed by UNEP-WCMC and is supported by its Partners UNDP, GEF and GEF-SGP. The contribution of case studies and registration of areas governed by communities has been a collaborative process since 2009 involving indigenous people and local community members, ICCA Consortium Members and Honorary members, UNEP-WCMC staff and other UN institutions, governments and consultants in the field.

Participation in the Registry is a voluntary process with multiple benefits for those participating. There are two ways to participate within the Registry:

National ICCA Registries

Besides the international ICCA Registry, some countries are developing national ICCA directories and registries.  A remarkable example from India compiled by the ICCA Consortium Member Foundation for Ecological Security (also with the support of Vasundhara, another Member) is the Directory for Community Conserved Areas in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Orissa (8 MB) [Please Check the cover picture on the left!].  Other national registries are under compilation in The Philippines, Iran and Madagascar.  Non-exhaustive national compilation of cases are also available for Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, India and for countries in Melanesia and Polynesia, the Andes, Central America, Central and Eastern Africa, etc.
(see the page on Regional Reviews on this site).

ICCA reviews and grassroots discussions

Prior to the establishment of the ICCA Registry the Consortium had developed a worldwide database on ICCAs documenting quantitative and qualitative information for specific sites that had been documented and discussed in grassroots discussions and/or regional reviews. Such site-specific data is available below.
