The Consortium at the 2016 World Conservation Congress


The ICCA Consortium has participated with a small delegation to the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress held in Honolulu (Hawai’i – USA) on 1-10 September 2016.

The Consortium has worked on and supported several motion. Here are the main ones:

022 – Recognizing, understanding and enhancing the role of indigenous peoples and local communities in tackling the illegal wildlife trade crisis

026 – Protected areas and other areas important for biodiversity in relation to environmentally damaging industrial-scale activities and infrastructure development.

029 – Recognizing and respecting the territories and areas conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities (ICCAs) overlapped by protected areas

030 – World Parks Congress 2014: The Promise of Sydney

033 – Safeguarding space for nature and securing our future: developing a post-2020 strategy

034 – Recognising cultural and spiritual significance of nature in protected and conserved areas


The Consortium has organised – among others – the following two events:

Conservation Campus : Conserving nature via self-determination and resistance to destructive development in ICCAs

    The ICCA Consortium has also participated in the E Alu Pū Global Gathering on August 28-30 prior to the WCC. The event was organised by local Indigenous peoples and the non-profit organisation Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo (KUA).
