Consortium activities:
  • Presentation by Isis Alvarez (GFC) on ICCAs and the Community Conservation Resilience Initiative as ecosystem-based adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies
  • Presentation by Muhamed Ewangaye Didane (IPACC) on the contributions of indigenous peoples and local communities
  • Drafting of a policy brief and companion document on ICCAs and climate change mitigation and adaptation (in progress)

Key policy outcomes:
  • Draft report entitled “Ecosystem-based Adaptation & Disaster Risk Reduction: A compilation of country experiences & synthesis of information”, was open for peer review and considered at SBSTTA-20 in April 2016.
  • “Synthesis report on Experiences with Ecosystem-Based Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction” was published as CBD Technical Series No. 85 and considers ICCAs in Chapter 7 on “Contribution of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to Ecosystem-based Approaches”.
Contribution to overall strategy: Contributed to objective of promoting indigenous and local knowledge and practices, and broader territories, as essential to monitoring and adapting to climate change and preventing disasters under the draft strategy on “ICCAs & Climate Change and Energy Law and Policy”
