Eleonora Fanari

Regional Coordinator for Europe

Eleonora Fanari is a social science researcher primarily engaged with the multifaceted aspects of the political ecology of conservation. Her main interests are land and forest rights, biodiversity governance, and environmental justice. She has extensively studied and worked in India on issues related to social and environmental rights, collaborating with various non-profit groups, including Kalpavriksh and Rights and Resources Initiative, as well as national unions such as the All India Union of Forest Working People and the National Alliance of People’s Movements.

She is an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium. She is also a member of the Direction Board of the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas), an online interactive platform that documents and catalogs social conflicts related to environmental issues. On the EJAtlas platform, she is particularly active in examining and documenting conflicts arising from green biodiversity policies, such as the creation and expansion of protected areas, carbon and biodiversity offsetting, and eco-tourism activities.

She holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the Institute of Science and Environmental Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.  She received her undergraduate degree in Social Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She holds a master’s degree in international relations from Cadiz University in Spain and a bachelor’s degree from Orientale University of Naples, where she graduated with a focus on South Asian studies and the Hindi language.
