E-learning module: “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+): Safeguards”

Summary: This module aims to provide an introduction to some of the key social and environmental safeguards and standards addressing REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, including conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks). REDD+ aims to generate financial payments for carbon stored in forests, and to provide incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forests. This climate change mitigation strategy is being negotiated within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The module includes a review of: some international social and environmental safeguards and standards; some of the rights, benefits and responsibilities they imply; some of their potential relevance for local communities; and how national safeguards systems may be developed and applied in practice.
