Sarah Alakara

Former Thematic representative for sustaining territories of life (2020-2023)

Based in Tanzania, Sarah Alakara Alaiasuya is a Maasai woman from northern Tanzania working to empower communities, and women in particular, to engage in wider decision making processes. As Rights and Leadership Programme Officer at Pastoral Women’s Council (ICCA Consortium member), Sarah Alakara advocates for equitable access to natural resources for women and Indigenous communities at the local and national levels. She is passionate about building the power of women and their communities to make decisions about the natural resources of their territories. Women in the pastoralist communities now own land and are on the front lines defending community land. Sarah works with them to raise awareness and facilitate formulation of community-specific strategies to sustainably use natural resources and take advantage of available opportunities so the entire community may thrive within their natural ecosystem.
