The ICCA Consortium is determined to sustain territories of life wherever they exist around the world, which can be done by safeguarding their ecological integrity while promoting and supporting the sustainable livelihoods, wellbeing and self-determination of the indigenous peoples and local communities willing to engage as their custodians. Broadly, ecological integrity refers to the capacity of a given ecosystem to support and maintain its ecological functions and to serve as habitats for a community of organisms. For sustainable livelihoods, wellbeing and self-determination, kindly see our Policy brief no 7 “Meaning and more…”.

The ICCA Consortium sustains specific ICCAs—territories of life by promoting and supporting processes of ICCA — self-strengthening . Specific programme initiatives are also being developed.
