National seminar on ICCAs in Malaysia held back-to-back with World Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous peoples’ organisations from across Malaysia gathered for a full-day seminar on ICCAs on 8 August 2018 in Bau, Sarawak. Unique to different Indigenous peoples in the three regions of Malaysia, terms such as Pemakai Menua, Pulau Galau, Gompi Guno and Ingaladan represent sophisticated systems of Indigenous customary laws and practices that enable the respective communities to live in harmony with their traditional territories.  Read more ▸

Indigenous Peoples Manage One Quarter of the Globe, Which Is Good News for Conservation

After pulling together data from 127 sources, including state records, census data, public maps and other studies, an international team of researchers published the first reliable data estimating that indigenous peoples, who make up approximately 5 percent of the world’s population, use or have management rights to more than a quarter of the earth’s surface—roughly 14.7 million square miles of land in 87 political regions. Read more ▸

Promoting ICCAs in Southeast Asian Governments

ICCAs were the highlight of the Tenure and Access Rights capacity building session of the CSO Forum for the ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry (AWG-SF) held in Da Nang, Vietnam last June 24-25.  The CSO Forum is an annual gathering organized by NTFP-EP to get inputs and recommendations from NGOs and indigenous and local communities from eight countries on the themes of tenure, safeguards, livelihoods and governance.  Read more ▸

Risks to the sanctity of community lands in Kenya. A critical assessment of new legislation with reference to forestlands

This paper focuses upon loopholes in new laws that could exclude forested lands from collective entitlement, impairing constitutional advances in the process. Ambiguity within the Kenyan Constitution itself plays a role. Therefore, while lesser impediments to land justice may be remedied through clarifying regulations and parliamentary removal of offending clauses, judicial interpretation of constitutional intentions is required.  Read more ▸

The Community Conservation Resilience Initiative 2018 Report

The aim of the CCRI is to provide policy advice about effective and appropriate support for community conservation as part of the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) 2011-2020 Strategic Plan, and to highlight that the rights of Indigenous peoples, local communities and women over their lands and territories must be upheld and supported. ICCA Advocates at the Communities, Conservation & Livelihoods Conference
