We invite everyone to donate to recovery and reconstruction efforts in the Cañamomo-Lomaprieta Indigenous Reservation, one of the territories most severely affected by the recent earthquake in Colombia.
This relief and reconstruction work is being led directly by Resguardo Indígena Cañamomo Lomaprieta, the Indigenous Organization of the municipalities of Riosucio and Supía, Caldas. As a Member of Red TICCA Colombia, they coordinate the ICCA Consortium’s Amazon subregion.
On August 10, Colombia was shaken by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the municipality of San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. The earthquake, the largest recorded in the country in the 21st century, was felt strongly across large areas of western and central Colombia and caused widespread destruction. The disaster left hundreds dead and thousands injured, displaced families, and destroyed homes and infrastructure.
Numerous communities within the Cañamomo-Lomaprieta Indigenous Reservation have suffered significant losses. As one of the oldest reservations in Colombia, it is home to the Embera Chamí Indigenous People. It covers 4,826 hectares and comprises 32 communities that maintain a deep relationship with their territories. Many families have lost their homes and livelihoods. Community infrastructure, educational centers, sugar mills, and roads have also been badly affected.
The ICCA Consortium shares the grief of those who have lost loved ones, the injured, and all communities coping with the destruction of their homes, community spaces, and territories.
We reaffirm our commitment to stand with communities and call for solidarity and collective action. Responding to an emergency of this magnitude requires joining forces, listening to the voices of those living in the impacted territories, and ensuring that reconstruction processes align with their needs and priorities.
We invite organizations, allies, and individuals to support the affected communities and contribute to their recovery efforts however they can. Every act of solidarity supports families and strengthens the reconstruction of their territories and livelihoods.
We trust in the strength and resilience of the Colombian people and are confident that with collective support, they will recover and move forward.
