The Heart of a Stream – Movies – Part 2 – A stream on governance at the Sydney Parks Congress 2014

This second short movie takes you to the heart of the Stream on Enhancing Diversity, Quality and Vitality of Governance of the World Parks Congress, Sydney 2014. You make a first stop in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, where a pre-Stream gathering of over three hundred people from five continents discussed issues of “communities conserving nature and culture” and consolidated a number of contributions to the Congress. The second stop introduces you to the “governance ambassadors” in Sydney and – through their work – to the numerous events that took place during the Stream itself and to the Stream conclusions, strongly echoed in the Promise of Sydney— the key summary outcome of the Congress. The last stop of the journey is in Jervis Bay, South of Sydney, where several “governance ambassadors” and colleagues endeavoured to refine the Stream’s recommendations and set the foundations for taking action on them.

XVth General Assembly – Rajasthan, India

The ICCA Consortium’s XVth General Assembly in Udaipur, India, was an important moment for the founding and next generation leadership. It marked the last GA co-organised by Grazia Borrini Feyerabend, one of the Consortium’s founders and leaders, who moved into the Council of Elders. The membership welcomed several new Council members by consensus, including a number of young leaders, as well as new team members in the global Secretariat. Read more ▸

A new resource for African environmental defenders

On International Human Rights Day, Natural Justice (ICCA Consortium Member) and the International Land Coalition present “African Environmental Defenders”, a resource for African land and environmental defenders. It aims at providing funding support in emergency situations.  Read more ▸

The Geneva Declaration – Companies Must Commit to Zero Tolerance Against Killing and Violence in Supply Chains

Representatives from indigenous peoples, afro-descendant, and peasant communities from 16 countries issued the Geneva Declaration, an urgent call for action that demands governments and companies end the violence, killing, and deliberate criminalisation of people defending their rights, their lands and their communities. Water Flowing Up the Mountain: Development Devours Forest Reserve

A forest reserve outside Zambia’s capital has been shrunk significantly to make way for housing and lifestyle developments. Even worse, these new developments are pumping sewage into the Chalimbana River and contaminating the fish and water that local communities rely on. Local activists, like Robert Chimambo (ICCA Consortium Honorary member), are struggling to protect the river and forest, and hope to turn this territory into a community protected forest area.  Read more ▸

The Territory of the Shuar Arutam People is a Territory of Life!

After a community consultation process, the Government Council of the Shuar Arutam People (ICCA Consortium Member in Ecuador) formalized the resolution to register their territory in the International WCMC ICCA Registry. “We made this decision with the strength of the Arutam, our supernatural protector principle,” said Josefina Tunki. Read more ▸
