Indigenous peoples and local communities assert their role in conservation at the IUCN African Protected and Conserved Areas Congress
In July 2022, the ICCA Consortium was present at the first African Protected and Conserved Areas Congress (APAC-Congress), organised in Kigali under the aegis of the IUCN. Indigenous Peoples and local communities made their voices heard, calling for conservation to be inclusive and community-led across the continent. Read more ▸

The second European Regional Assembly of the ICCA Consortium envisions expanding membership and establishing a regional technical unit
The assembly discussed at length how to make the European territories of life more visible within the relevant legal and policy frameworks. The participants also recommended establishing national-level networks and networks of territories of life linking communities speaking the same mother tongue. Read more ▸
The ICCA Consortium holds its 19th General Assembly online, the first with staggered approach
More than 200 people, including representatives of more than 100 Member organizations, participated in the ICCA Consortium’s 19th General Assembly, which was held over four sessions in as many months. The Assembly learned about key aspects of the work carried out in 2022 and took several important decisions for the future of the association. Members and Honorary members also participated in a series of optional membership engagement events on diverse topics. Read more ▸

The natural and cultural heritage of the High Atlas on display at the 2022 edition of the Biocultural Festival in Morocco
In July 2022, the Biocultural Festival of Morocco, organized by the Moroccan Biodiversity and Livelihoods Association (MBLA, ICCA Consortium Member), focused on sustaining territories of life and preserving farmers’ seeds and traditional culinary knowledge. It also emphasized semi-nomadic pastoralists and the Agdals’ contributions to biodiversity conservation. Read more ▸

COP15 event explored the role of relationships, partnerships, and networks in supporting Indigenous Peoples and local communities
This joint event, co-organised by the ICCA Consortium, Maliasili, Luc Hoffmann Institute, and IUCN CEESP, reflected on the core values that should guide relationships and partnerships and the power imbalances that often pervade them. Overall, the event highlighted the importance of reconceptualising partnerships from the perspective of Indigenous Peoples and local communities themselves and in the form of networks of solidarity and support. The first regional assembly of ICCA Consortium Members in East Austronesia and the Pacific Islands helped make significant progress in the movement for the Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ territories of life in the region as the Members built consensus on common strategic direction and plans.
