A main objective of the Consortium at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP 11 was to ensure ICCAs are understood and adopted as important components of the CBD’s Strategic Plan for Biodiversity to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (ABT). The Strategy and its twenty goals are designed to halt the biological diversity loss of our planet.

Consortium participants contributed to negotiations and organised events relating to:

  • Legal and non-legal ways to appropriately recognise and support ICCAs;
  • Governance of Protected Areas (PAs);
  • The establishment of National ICCA federations and networks;
  • The role of ICCAs for food sovereignty;
  • Indigenous People & Local Community contributions towards National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs);
  • The role of ICCAs in achieving the CBD Aichi Targets;
  • Recommendations to the Parties and the CBD Secretariat in relation to ICCAs.
