Food sovereignty is a radical alternative to conventional approaches to development and environmental conservation. By putting farmers and peoples at the centre, food sovereignty allows the traditional custodians of terraced landscapes to regenerate a diversity of local ecologies, economies, and cultures as part of a new modernity. After briefly describing the origins and history of food sovereignty, this paper highlights some of the major challenges that need to be addressed to enable the spread of food sovereignty in terraced landscapes and their associated territories.
