Manuel May Castillo

Collaborator as Spanish < > English translator and interpreter

Based in Mexico and Germany. Manuel is a Maya from the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and a member of the Indigenous organization Ka’ Kuxtal Much Meyaj (Member of the ICCA Consortium since 2009). Manuel holds a Ph.D. in Maya Heritage. His areas of expertise range from cultural heritage, anthropology, and rights. His work is committed to several strategies addressing the most pressing problems of the Mayan communities. In particular, those problems afflicting the Mayan territories of life. In the last decade, Manuel has served as a lecturer/researcher at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) and the German universities of Bonn (Bonn Universität) and Munich (LMU). In parallel, he has taken part in the forum of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York. Since 2015 he works with an expert group of the International Law Association on the implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
