Totonicapán (Guatemala) and its marvelously conserved forests provided an ideal hosting environment for the first ICCA Consortium’s regional meeting in Mesoamerica. The meeting gathered Consortium Members and colleagues from various countries across Mesoamerica and beyond.

Initiated by the ICCA Consortium and co-organized by Oxlajuj Ajpop, the association Ut’z Che, the Global Diversity Foundation and the Sacred Natural Sites Initiatives (SNSI), the meeting was attended by delegates from five countries in the region, and Consortium members from abroad, including Natural Justice.

A synthesis of the meeting is downloadable here in
English and in Spanish, while the presentations illustrated and discussed at the meeting are available below.

Some key outcomes from the meeting were:

  •  identification of “characteristic elements” of an ICCA model that could be valid throughout the region;
  • a decision passed to establish a Mesoamerican network of ICCAs;
  • identification of two regional co-coordinators for the Consortium (one expected to focus mostly on ICCA issues of relevance for indigenous peoples and the other on ICCA issues of relevance for local communities).
