Conserving nature via self-determination and resistance to destructive development in ICCAs – a Campus event at the World Parks Congress (Waikiki, Hawaii, 4 September 2016)
Custodian indigenous peoples & local communities govern billion hectares of land & sea & demonstrate conservation by local institutions & rules, outside & inside protected areas. Such communities also resist destructive change and uphold cultural, spiritual & livelihood values in their conserved territories (ICCAs), and often pay for it… A Campus event held at the World Conservation Congress that took place in Waikiki, Hawaii on 4 September 2016 has explored the conditions that secure the immense, invaluable yet poorly recognized community conservation efforts against imposed destructive “development”.
