Festival of Northern Fishing Traditions Brings Global Small-Scale and Indigenous Fishermen to North
Co-organised by Interreg Nord Summer Whitefish and Snowchange Cooperative, the Festival of Northern Fishing Traditions has concluded successfully in Tornio, Finland. Over 150 small-scale and Indigenous fisher women and men around the world joined forces to discuss climate change, traditional knowledge, governance and direct exchanges to meet common challenges. Indigenous peoples’ organisations from across Malaysia gathered for a full-day seminar on ICCAs on 8 August 2018 in Bau, Sarawak. Unique to different Indigenous peoples in the three regions of Malaysia, terms such as Pemakai Menua, Pulau Galau, Gompi Guno and Ingaladan represent sophisticated systems of Indigenous customary laws and practices that enable the respective communities to live in harmony with their traditional territories. A delegation of 20 members of the ICCA Consortium was in New York from the 14th to the 23rd of April to participate in the 17th session of the United Nation Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Two powerful statements in support of indigenous peoples’ collective rights and their role in conservation were made in the larger assembly, and our side-event on resistance to destructive development in ICCAs filled the room. Indigenous Peoples Present their Community Protocols to the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak
Five Indigenous communities in Sabah have been documenting their community protocols on adat and their ICCAs and engaging with High Court judges and native lawyers to improve recognition of these protocols in both court systems They presented them in front of Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, and the chairman of the Native Laws, Materials and Cases Committee.
