Update: Tentative legal advances in the Tumandoks’ pursuit of justice in the Philippines

Legal actions have secured the release of six Indigenous Tumandok who were arbitrarily arrested along with ten others in a horrific raid on 30 December 2020 that killed nine fellow Tumandok. The ICCA Consortium continues to stand in solidarity with the Tumandok and Defend Panay Network and further expresses concern with how the Philippines’ state legal system is weaponized to perpetuate injustices against Indigenous Peoples. Read more ▸

The Indigenous Tumandok people have a rich culture that is rooted in their ancestral domain along and within the Jalaur and Pan-ay Rivers in Central Panay, Philippines. They have faced several threats to their lives and territory, particularly surrounding the proposed construction of the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project, a USD 200 million project financed by the Export-Import Bank (Eximbank) of the Republic of Korea. Read more ▸

The Indigenous Obu Manuvu community of Davao City on Mindanao Island, Philippines owns over 13,000 hectares of ancestral forests. By engaging the Obu Manuvu “Pusaka” cosmology, they manage these ancestral forests as an ICCA to benefit biodiversity, regional economy and, more importantly their well-being and culture. The 9th Southeast Asian Conference on Human Rights and Business

During the conference held in the Philippines, delegates released the Bata’an Statement, committing themselves to continued collaboration on tackling business related human rights abuses in the region, as well as calling on businesses and states to address these abuses.
