“Nurturing Nature through Culture” is the title of a webinar held on 18 May 2020, co-organised by the ICCA Consortium, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) and GYBN-Philippines. As a contribution to the week-long online celebration launched by GYBN for the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) on 22 May, the discussion aimed at understanding the interlinkages between traditional knowledge and biodiversity from a youth perspective. This youth-led event shed light on youth who are reclaiming and defending their vibrant cultures, and how this directly leads to the conservation of their land.
The panel included four indigenous youth actively conserving and safeguarding their indigenous knowledge and territories of life:
- Ms. Ailen Quilaleo (Mapuche – part of the Confederación Mapuche de Neuquen, ICCA Consortium Member)
- Mr. Rius Valle (Mandaya – Lumad)
- Ms. Salesi Angelique Jack (San – part of the San Youth network, ICCA Consortium Member)
- Ms. Gladys Cumanda Alvarado Nenquimo (Waorani – part of AMWAE – Asociación de Mujeres Waorani de la Amazonía Ecuatoriana, ICCA Consortium Member):
It also included the current Chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) Ms. Anne Nuorgam (Saami).
